In the Medina, all the houses are built around cool courtyards, with galleries around the well providing light and air down through the building. There are few outward facing windows so the doors are often the only distinguishing features of a house or inn. The owners of the houses would put elaborate embellishments on the solid doors, while still providing an almost impregnable barrier.
